Wow, I didn’t know you loved Pearl and X so much. Lol, I figured they really wouldn’t be for you. Also Inside Out is my all-time favorite Pixar film, and it absolutely needed a sequel. The fact that we haven’t gotten one for this long is crazy. Regardless of how Inside Out 2 turns out, the concept of an Inside Out sequel has so much potential to be some of the deepest and most thoughtful material in all of Pixar. Btw Wes Ball is underrated af and I’ll forever die on that hill.

Love this episode, so glad you mentioned the shave scene with Smee. Smee is my fave Disney character, even if he's from my least fave classic movie. I even own the original photostats used during production. In the full scene, the seagull nests in the hot towel and then she lays an egg on Hook's head as she flies away. I tried sharing a link to some scans of the original art from the full scene (from my personal collection), but I think the comment got blocked (looked like spam maybe). Fun idea for an episode.

I was just so excited when I heard you mention this scene, because no one knows it! I tell people I have some original photostats from Disney, and people want to know "what character?" And I'm like, oh the nesting mother seagull who gets her rear end shaved. And then I get blank stares xD At least it also has a couple sketches of Smee and Hook.

The new Magnificent 7 just doesn't hold water to the 1960s version. 7th Samurai is hard to follow. It is too long and it is hard to get to know all the characters with a subtitled movie. It was good over all. The 1960s version was the best hands down. The writing is excellent. Character development for all and even the one's who die are significant to their character's overall story and goals. They are the one's who have no real family, past, nor future.

This is a topic I've never really thought about, but it made for an interesting discussion. I don't know if you or Stanford ever thought about doing a discussion about your picks for worst Disney scenes, but I can understand why you might not be up for something with a more negative vibe. But if you two ever want to do something different, I'd be curious what you think regarding the Pixar shorts, or even just your favourites, but I guess the Disney shorts could also be contenders.

One of my favorite musicals and one of my favorite films of a musical, easily. I agree with all your praise, it's so beautifully done, I love the bouncy goofiness throughout the film (it could be such a downer, the main character is trying to rob the entire town, but it's all so lighthearted!) the songs of course are iconic, and it's hard to pull off an enemies-to-lovers romance, but they do it so charmingly.

Just saw your "review" of GBFE and I kind of thought the same thing when you said "Everyone gets to be a Ghostbuster now"? But, my thought was about move critics. After seeing your reviews along with a thousand other uneducated, so called "Movie Critics" I asked myself. What, does everyone with a half a$$ed opinion and a youtube channel get to be a movie critic now?

    • @RachelsReviews

Guess so. I saw and reviewed over 500 movies last year and have been doing this for over a decade but sure. I have a masters degree and have attended many film festivals, am part of several professional critic organizations, been published in newspapers and featured on television and radio. I'm not sure what qualifies for you as an educated critic but feel free to find those people and enjoy their reviews.

Great to see some appreciation for independent animated films. Independent films are sadly an unfairly overlooked part of film medium cause they can get easily overshadowed by more mainstream films from the Hollywood studio system. I also love Finding Nemo as well and it’s amazing how well the water settings and animation still holds up very well 2 decades later. Although I do agree some parts of the animation can be dated. The fish characters still look great, but the humans…. yeah, you can tell Pixar still had a long way to go when creating and animating human characters. To paraphrase AniMat from his Classic Review of Madagascar: “I don’t know about you but if I was living in Sydney, Australia where the humans looked like THIS, I’d too want to escape into the ocean.”

Asha is a boring protagonist. I mentioned the "adorkable" problem that you mention, which there's so many Yotuube videos on now Wish has come out, back in the comments on your reaction to the Wish trailer. I said, "Asha feels like just another goofy, perky, semi-awkward, woman protagonist, which is pretty much Disney's stock-character at this point (Mirabel, Anna, Moana, Mulan, etc)." Well, now all of Yotube is talking about it because everyone is tired of it. What's worse, Asha is only awkward and silly in the beginning of them movie. Once she starts singing the Wish song, she suddenly becomes reasonably well-poised and remains so for the most part for the rest of the movie! Um. Where did her character go!? And speaking of characters, the seven dwarfs (nobody remembers their names, they're just the diet-7-dwarfs) are mildly amusing but they have barely any reason to be here and barely any character. Stanford made a very good point when he said we don't know any of their wishes in *a movie about people's wishes*. What the hell! Goat-character is obnoxious. The break-dancing chickens seems like a fun idea, I guess it should've been fun. Why wasn't it fun? If the muppets did break-dancing chickens I'd probably think it's hilarious, here I'm just bored. The song the animals sing is bland and obnoxious pop. I love pop, good pop not spineless pop with messy lyrics including a deer singing "here I are" instead of "here I am" in order to rhyme with star! I could go on and on. But I've rambled enough. This movie is boring. It is RIDDLED with plot-holes and character-issues and it doesn't work. This is DISNEY Chicken Little is years and years in the past they make movies like Wreck it Ralph and Tangled and Frozen and Big Hero 6 now, what happened!? Like you and Stanford said, I have hope for the future, this is the company that made Snow White and began the animated feature-length film. I really hope they turn this around. Is this a safe place to vent about Wish? Good, because I've finally seen it now it's on Disneyplus and GOD Wish is not good. The goat is unfunny, the songs are forgettable, the animation is muted and dull... It's like Disney just forgot how to movie, it's a headscracther, it's their Earwig and the Witch. Even Strange World had an imaginative world and good-looking animation, this is just nothing, it's a towering pile of absolutely nothing. If you're going to celebrate the great tradition of Disney, then why not bring back someone who'se *part* of that tradition? Why hire pop-song writers you've never worked with before!? Why not bring back Lin Manuel Miranda, or Alen Menken, (why do they never work with Menken anymore?) Or Richard Sherman? Why does Disney animation not seem to know Sherman, one of the greatest parts of Disney's legacy, is still alive and could still write them a song? HELL, why not have Miranda, Menken, and Sherman all write songs TOGETHER how epic would that be? Instead, we get this crap. "I let you liver here for free, and I don't even charge you rent!" Those mean the same thing! Also, like Doug Walker/Nostalgia critic point out, they don't really even need to book to possess him and make him evil because he's flown off the handle! His people just ask him perfectly natural questions and he goes beserk for no good reason! So... why have him be made crazy and evil by the Big Book of Badness? He's already crazy and evil *without* the Big Book of Bandess! Asha is a boring protagonist. I mentioned the "adorkable" problem that you mention, which there's so many Yotuube videos on now Wish has come out, back in the comments on your reaction to the Wish trailer. There’s also the thing about having a scene without dialogue that isn’t just an action scene. This isn’t exactly a montage, but it has a lot of the same vibes. Also, while it might not be furthering the plot in terms of, say, the Wikipedia summary, it is quite important for furthering the characters arcs and progression for the reasons you say, of bringing joy into Rapunzel’s life being out and about with people. So, yep, great scene from a great film! ❤

Whenever I watch Cinderella, I always have to skip over the scene where the stepsisters destroy her dress. Same with The Little Mermaid when King Triton destroys Ariel’s grotto. It’s just too traumatising!

As a GC Conure owner myself (and working with animals in general my whole life) Just watched this recently and oh my word! This movie can and WILL make you ugly cry for your childhood pet! For me, it reminded me of my Pet goat spot and when my dad sold her. I was 5 and try as hard as I could to be a big girl... That was my best friend he sold and I was depressed and cried for days. Then my dad, hat in hand goes to the man and says "I need that goat back" She never left our home again and lived to the ripe old age of 14. Now I have my own goats (all 15) and they are my pride and joy!

❤ So chuffed to hear this came to your area eventually - of the ten D100 UK films I saw in the cinema last Autumn, this was the one I thought benefitted most from the cinema size, experience and soundscape, especially off the new 4K transfer. The way it plays with focus and the diffused realism down to the strokes of wet bark, the spirituality akin to a Terrance Malick film present in scenes like the raindrops, the stag battle, and the whole forest fire climax, plus the deft blend of impressionistic tones through the cycle of forest life… it was pure artistry. Not a film I’ve seen all that many times, being rather unconventional in narrative, but it’s a delight whenever I have. And you’re getting Snow White soon? That’ll be a treat - hope the kids in your screening will go nuts for the timeless slapstick… 😅

Stanford and I will both be at Snow White so it should be a fun time. I agree with you about Bambi. It definitely added a layer seeing it on the big screen with the sound and feeling like you could see the brushstrokes of the animators. One of the biggest big screen glow-ups of a Disney film I've seen

It must be the best in the series still. It’s the only one I watched on the big screen twice! And got on DVD. I’m so glad they re-released it so kids could know what it was like to see this on there and get caught up in the epic fight scenes, sweeping emotions, and hilarious comedy the way I did all those years before they were born. And when you go in to see a movie called Kung Fu Panda…. Really blew my twelve-year-old mind.

  • @kirkengstrom917

I really do hope they make a Kung Fu Panda 5 and 6, though. Turning Po into a genuine spiritual leader the likes of Oogway would be this franchise’s biggest challenge, and the only way they could hope to top the previous movies and bring everything full circle.

I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago. I loved it. It was a lot of fun. I preferred it over My Fair Lady. I didn't really have any problems with it. The relationship between Audrey and Fred was nice I didn't have a problem with the age gap. Its just a movie. I agree with you about Audrey's character getting kind of annoying towards the end. Up until that point it was perfection.

I had a lot of fun watching it, but it definitely felt like the most expendable entry in the series yet. It really is the most by-the-numbers and procedural effort by them yet. This is the only one where I didn’t feel convinced that Po had really learned much of anything, and the only one other than Kung Fu Panda 2 where everything just felt kind of predictable. The arc with Awkafina’s character was easy to see and even feels derivative of the arc her character caused Raya to go through. It was nice to hear Ian McShane as Tai Lung again but wish he had been used more effectively. I didn’t really buy the nobility that all the dead villains showed towards Po. It was supposed to show, I suppose, that their time in the Spirit World had really cleansed or mellowed them, but this kind of falls on its ass when we already saw that our last villain had spent hundreds of years in the Spirit World to begin with. I wasn’t much bothered by the fact that Gary Oldman and J.K. Simmons didn’t come back to voice them, though. After all, I hated Lord Shen’s character and the fact that Kai was there at all seemed like a mistake, considering that as I recall his soul had been completely obliterated at the end of KFP3. All-in-all, I didn’t completely dislike it the way that I did Kung Fu Panda 2, but other than that, this would definitely be the weakest entry in the series. I enjoyed it a lot when I was watching, but the climax is a letdown and when it was over, I realized that it was the only one that would leave virtually no impact on me at all.

I haven't seen this adaptation. Since the reviews haven't been good, I did some exploration and watched a few brief scenes on UA-cam. Definitely not going to waste time watching the entire movie. The phrase "adapted for modern audiences' comes to mind...and that usually means the characters and story are pretty much unrecognizable, and in ways that don't improve upon the characters or the plot. What was done to Anne is a travesty. The character of Anne Eliot is iconic in her uniqueness as a J.A. protagonist, in that she is quiet and reserved. And I love that she maintains her quiet reserve while making the decision to step away from her awful family and pursue her own happiness for once. Amanda Root was a perfectly lovely Anne, with Ciaran Hinds as a wonderful Wentworth. The 1995 version is by far my favorite.
